WARREN — A 34-year-old mother is charged with two counts of child endangering after two young children, a 20-month-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, were seen running alone in the 300 block of Homewood Avenue SE.

Brittany Spitler of Homewood Avenue pleaded not guilty to the two fourth-degree felonies on Monday in Warren Municipal Court. She was released from jail after posting a $10,000 bond.

As part of her bond, Judge Terry Ivanchak ordered Spitler not to have contact with the two children and report to a Trumbull County Children Services caseworker.

According to the police report, the two children were seen outside about 10 a.m. Saturday, running unsupervised into the roadway. The report states that one child had a full diaper. Officers later interviewed the mother, whom the report stated appeared lethargic and was slurring her words.

Officers later learned from children services that the children are in the custody of their grandparents, who live in Cortland, and were with their mother for an unsupervised visit. An inspection of the home later found a pill bottle that contained 18 pills of three different types of prescription medicine, plus a glass meth pipe, a snort straw, two ripped plastic bags and a torch, according to the report.

The woman, identified as Spitler, was taken into custody, the report states.

Court records show a preliminary hearing is set for Spitler on Sept. 27 in Warren Municipal Court.
